Cheap Eats

I found these facts on another blog I follow sometimes.  Interesting little bit of information.  Some people wonder why I choose to eat unprocessed unpackaged foods and cook it ourselves.  This is a little snapshot of why we do what we do.  For more, here is the link to the blog I "borrowed" this from http://dinnergarden.blogspot.com/

For example, tonight's dinner :
Acorn squash rings stuffed with meatloaf: Acorn squash was free from a friend's garden, the meat was from Softich Cattle Co., I figure I used under a pound to stuff the squash so approx $2.50
Green beans with sun dried tomatoes and feta cheese:  Beans were from our garden, feta was on discount - 2lbs for 4.99 I used maybe .20 cents worth and the sun dried tomatoes - I was generous and probably used .30.
Fruit salad - 4 kiwi from a neighbor free, 1 apple .69 a pound the apples were 4:1 lb, so it was .18 and an orange at .49 a lb, so .25 of orange
3 cups milk - .75
All told, a dinner for a family of 4, plus 6 rings leftover for lunch/dinner tomorrow and about a cup of green beans to go with it was approximately a total of $4.18.  There is no way we could have eaten out or bought pre-made for that price.  The biggest bonus is that lunch and part of dinner is already made for tomorrow.
